How to Wear High Waist Jeans

I’ve been horrified of this style of jeans for…well…ever.  I’m terrified I’ll look like I’m wearing “mom jeans”, have a terrible case of “butt-back” (you know, where your back and your bum seem to be one and the same), or worst of all, that I’ll look like Jessica Simpson in those terribly unflattering pictures of her wearing high waist jeans while performing at some county fair.

And while I’m still a little scared of this style, there are a couple things you can do to ensure you get this look right.

  1. Always tuck in your shirt.  A tailored button-down echos the polished look of these pants.  Besides, you don’t want to go hiding the fact that you’re actually rocking the high waist jeans by covering them up with an un-tucked shirt?
  2. A narrow belt defines the midsection and gives the the final outfit a pulled together look.  This is where I think Jessica Simpson went wrong.  She wore TWO thicker belts with her jeans.  Ouch.
  3. A longer, flared cut is a must.  It balances out the height of the jean and slims your thighs. Add a 70’s inspired wedge or heel and you are good to go.

While you’re at it, if you’re going to embrace this look, go all out and glam it up 70’s style.  There’s no use trying to make this look fresh and new.  It’s straight up 70’s.  Own it.  Grab the gingham button down and do your hair a la Jackie from That 70’s Show.
